Introducing EmbryoGuard™ — MTC Bio's New MEA Tested Tubes Now Available at LIGHT LABS

Posted by Cary Gummelt on Apr 17th 2026

LIGHT LABS is pleased to announce that we now carry the new MTC Bio EmbryoGuard™ MEA Tested Tubes — a purpose-built line of centrifuge tubes designed for laboratories where the biological compatibility of every consumable in contact with the sample is not a preference, but a requirement.

Available now in four formats — 5mL (M6205), 14mL (M6212), 15mL (M6215), and 50mL (M6250) — EmbryoGuard™ tubes are tested to established Mouse Embryo Assay (MEA) standards and manufactured from high-purity plastics specifically validated for embryo-sensitive workflows including IVF research, reproductive biology, embryology, and stem cell culture.

What Is the Mouse Embryo Assay — and Why Does It Matter?

The Mouse Embryo Assay (MEA) is the gold standard bioassay for evaluating whether laboratory plasticware is biologically safe for use in assisted reproduction and embryology. In the MEA, mouse embryos are cultured in direct contact with the test material or an extract thereof, and embryo development is monitored over time. Plasticware that passes the MEA has demonstrated that leachable compounds from the material do not impair embryo cleavage, blastulation, or developmental progression at concentrations encountered in normal laboratory use.

For IVF clinics, embryology core facilities, and reproductive biology research labs, MEA-tested consumables are a fundamental quality requirement. The consequences of using non-validated plasticware in embryo-sensitive workflows can include impaired fertilization, reduced cleavage rates, failed blastulation, and diminished embryo viability — outcomes that are difficult to trace back to the consumable without rigorous lot-level documentation.

Every tube in the EmbryoGuard™ line is tested to MEA standards and ships with a Certificate of MEA compliance for full lot-level traceability.

Why Standard Centrifuge Tubes Are Not Enough

This is a question we hear often: "Can't I just use standard sterile centrifuge tubes for my embryo work?" The short answer is no — and here's why.

Standard laboratory centrifuge tubes — even those that are sterile, RNase-free, and DNase-free — are not necessarily manufactured to the purity levels required for embryo-sensitive applications. Plasticizers, mold-release agents, antioxidants, and other residual processing compounds that have no measurable effect on robust established cell lines can be profoundly detrimental to embryo development and viability. A tube that performs perfectly for routine molecular biology or general cell culture may introduce embryotoxic leachables at concentrations that impair the very earliest stages of embryo development.

EmbryoGuard™ tubes are manufactured from high-purity plastics specifically selected and validated to minimize biological impact — providing the safety margin that IVF and reproductive biology labs require for their most sensitive workflows.

Introducing the EmbryoGuard™ Line — Four Formats, One Trusted Standard

The EmbryoGuard™ line covers the full range of centrifuge tube formats used across the IVF and reproductive biology workflow. All four sizes are now available at LIGHT LABS:

EmbryoGuard™ M6205 — 5mL MEA Tested Centrifuge Tubes The 5mL format is ideal for small-volume media handling, reagent and enzyme aliquoting, sperm sample preparation, and any workflow step where a standard 5mL conical tube is the appropriate vessel. MEA-tested assurance extends to every small-volume handling step throughout the embryology workflow — not just the culture itself.

EmbryoGuard™ M6212 — 14mL MEA Tested Centrifuge Tubes The 14mL format bridges the gap between the 5mL and 15mL for culture and transport applications, mid-volume density gradient centrifugation, and sperm processing procedures that require slightly more volume than a 5mL tube can accommodate. A practical choice for labs that want MEA-validated assurance at the culture and transport stage of their workflow.

EmbryoGuard™ M6215 — 15mL MEA Tested Centrifuge Tubes The 15mL conical is the most universally used tube format in cell biology and reproductive medicine. The M6215 brings MEA-tested biological safety assurance to this standard format — making it the natural drop-in replacement for labs that currently use standard 15mL conical tubes in their IVF or embryology workflows and want to upgrade to validated, embryo-safe plasticware without changing their protocols.

EmbryoGuard™ M6250 — 50mL MEA Tested Centrifuge Tubes The 50mL format is the workhorse for large-volume media preparation, bulk density gradient centrifugation for sperm selection (Percoll®, PureSperm®, and other gradient media), and large-scale cell processing steps in IVF and reproductive biology labs. The M6250 brings MEA-tested assurance to the scale at which media is most commonly prepared and density gradients are most often run — ensuring that no step of the workflow is left unvalidated.

All EmbryoGuard™ Tubes Are:

  • Mouse Embryo Assay (MEA) tested — lot-certified
  • Manufactured from high-purity plastics
  • Sterile
  • RNase-free
  • DNase-free
  • Pyrogen-free

Who Should Be Using MEA Tested Tubes?

If your lab is involved in any of the following workflows, EmbryoGuard™ tubes belong in your consumables inventory:

IVF (in vitro fertilization) research and clinical workflows, assisted reproductive technology (ART) procedures, mouse and human embryo culture, sperm preparation and density gradient selection, embryo culture media preparation and aliquoting, stem cell culture and expansion, reproductive toxicology studies, and any sensitive cell culture application where the biological compatibility of plasticware must be documented and verified.

If you are currently using standard centrifuge tubes in any of these workflows, upgrading to EmbryoGuard™ is one of the simplest and most impactful steps you can take to reduce the risk of material-related interference in your embryo-sensitive results.
