Removing red blood cells is often the first hurdle in getting clean RNA from whole blood. This Zymo Research buffer selectively lyses erythrocytes so you can pellet the remaining blood cells for RNA extraction, and it is the red cell lysis reagent used in the Quick-RNA Whole Blood kit.

Mix whole blood with the buffer to lyse red cells, centrifuge to collect the nucleated cell pellet, then continue with RNA extraction from the pelleted cells. Clearing away hemoglobin-rich red cells helps reduce interference in downstream steps. The buffer is supplied in 50 ml and 100 ml sizes for restocking or standalone blood processing.
