The 35-011-CV is the preferred choice for cell culture applications and protocols that specifically require heat inactivated FBS — where the destruction of complement components and other heat-labile serum proteins by the inactivation process is either required by the protocol or beneficial for the specific cell type being cultured.
Heat inactivation is a thermal treatment process applied to FBS to destroy complement proteins (a family of ~30 serum proteins that form part of the innate immune system) and other heat-labile components. In cell culture applications, complement proteins can sometimes cause non-specific cytotoxicity — particularly for certain cell types including some hybridoma cells, primary immune cells, and cell lines with complement receptors on their surface. For these applications, heat inactivated FBS eliminates this source of non-specific cell death, improving culture viability and reproducibility. Heat inactivation also destroys certain growth factors and other bioactive proteins — a trade-off that makes heat inactivated FBS less ideal for applications where maximum growth factor activity is required, which is why the non-heat-inactivated 35-010-CV remains the preferred format for most routine cell culture.
