LIGHT LABS is excited to announce the addition of MTC Bio ILP SiO₂ Glass Coated Multiwell Plates to our catalog — a new line of deep well plates that brings the chemical resistance, reduced extractables, and improved sample recovery of glass to the convenience and durability of a polypropylene plate body. Available in 96-round well, 96-square well, and 384-square well formats across a wide range of well volumes and geometries, these plates are now in stock and available at our Glass Coated Plates category.
What Are SiO₂ Glass Coated Plate Wells?
Standard polypropylene (PP) deep well plates are the workhorse of high-throughput sample storage, extraction, and compound handling — but PP has well-known limitations for certain applications. Polypropylene can adsorb lipophilic compounds and small molecules onto well surfaces, reducing sample recovery and introducing variability between wells. PP can also release trace extractables and leachables into samples, potentially interfering with sensitive assays, mass spectrometry, or other analytical workflows. And for applications involving aggressive organic solvents or certain reactive compounds, PP's chemical resistance may not be sufficient.
MTC Bio's ILP Glass Coated Plates address all three of these limitations with a proprietary SiO₂ (silicon dioxide) glass coating applied to the interior surface of each polypropylene well. The SiO₂ layer creates a true glass-like inner barrier between the sample and the PP substrate, combining the mechanical strength and automation compatibility of a polypropylene plate body with the inertness and performance characteristics of glass well surfaces.
The result is a plate that delivers three key advantages over standard PP deep well plates:
Superior Chemical Resistance — Glass is more resistant than PP to many organic solvents and aggressive chemicals, making these plates well suited for chemical synthesis, liquid-liquid extraction, protein precipitation, and compound handling workflows that would risk degrading or swelling a standard PP well surface.
Reduced Extractables and Leachables — The SiO₂ inner barrier creates a physical separation between the sample and the polymer substrate, significantly reducing the risk of PP additives or trace compounds leaching into the sample. This is particularly valuable for mass spectrometry sample preparation, bioanalytical workflows, and any application where background contamination from the plate itself is a concern.
Improved Sample Recovery and Consistency — If your analyte tends to adsorb to PP surfaces, the glass coating reduces those surface interactions, meaning more of the material remains in solution and well-to-well variability decreases. This is critical for compound management, drug discovery screening, and high-value sample workflows where maximizing recovery matters.

Which Format Is Right for Your Application?
96-round well plates are the traditional deep well format and are compatible with the widest range of liquid handlers, robotic systems, and plate readers. They are available in the broadest range of volumes (300 µL through 2.0 mL) and bottom geometries, making them the most versatile choice for general sample storage, SPE, and extraction workflows.
96-square well plates maximize the volume per well relative to the plate footprint, and the square geometry allows adjacent wells to be positioned closer together — maximizing usable volume. At 2.0 mL (U-bottom) and 2.2 mL (V-bottom), these are the highest-volume options in the glass coated lineup and are ideal for large-volume sample preparation, solvent extraction, and compound storage applications where maximum well volume is the priority.
384-square well plates are designed for high-throughput applications where plate density is critical — compound library storage, high-throughput screening, and miniaturized sample preparation workflows. Available in shallow (120 µL, U-bottom) and deeper (200 µL, V-bottom) formats.
U-bottom vs. V-bottom: U-bottom wells provide a larger residual volume at the bottom of the well, making them better for applications where you want to avoid disturbing a pellet or need to aspirate a larger fraction of the well volume. V-bottom wells concentrate the sample to a very small area at the tip, making them ideal for pelleting applications, precipitation, and maximizing recovery when aspirating small volumes.
